Job Description

Job Duties:

1. Experience being company’s highest level of HR / HR strategy

o Serve as the final HR authority and trusted advisor to the CEO and leadership team, providing high-level counsel on complex employment matters, workforce planning, and organizational design across all entities.

  • Balance high-level strategy with a hands-on approach, actively participating in HR tasks and initiatives as needed. This role is not just about directing others, but about actively driving and executing the work.

o Provide executive-level leadership and coaching to the HR team, fostering a culture of accountability, growth, and continuous improvement.

o Act as the company’s highest-level HR resource, balancing legal risk, business needs, and employee experience with unwavering integrity and sound judgment.

2. Legal matters

o Manage and resolve complex legal and regulatory matters, including litigated workers’ compensation claims, labor board complaints and investigations, lawsuits, and employment-related insurance and audit issues. Collaborate closely with legal counsel and external advisors to protect the company’s interests and ensure the organization remains in full compliance.

3. Regulatory Compliance Reporting

o Lead and direct all HR compliance and regulatory initiatives, including Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliance, EEO-1 reporting, and Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance for applicable employees.

4. High Level Work Comp

o Oversee safety programs and workplace injury prevention efforts, including workers’ compensation claims management and experience modification (X-Mod) analysis.

5. High Level 401(k)

o Direct the administration of benefits programs, including the design and negotiation of health and welfare plans, retirement benefits (including serving as the 401(k) plan administrator), ACA compliance reporting, COBRA administration, and leave programs for employees across entities.

o Serve as the company’s 401(k) administrator, overseeing plan compliance, employee enrollment and communication, and working closely with accounting and external providers to ensure accurate reporting and administration.

6. High Level Payroll Software Support

o Provide high-level oversight of payroll practices while also being cross-trained on payroll fundamentals and day-to-day processing details. This includes collaborating with external providers (ADP Workforce Now for California and Rippling for Washington), working with accounting to ensure accuracy, and being prepared to step in to address complex issues or perform basic payroll tasks as needed.

o Oversee and manage HR system data integrity and payroll system structure, including pay codes, department structures, and PTO policy configurations across ADP Workforce Now (California) and Rippling (Washington).

7. Training / Performance / Culture / Compensation Structure

o Create and maintain compensation structures in collaboration with the accounting team, ensuring alignment with company goals, proper FLSA classification, and compliance with applicable wage and hour laws.

o Drive initiatives to enhance organizational culture, employee engagement, and performance management, ensuring alignment with strategic business objectives.

o Design and implement leadership development and training programs that foster growth and accountability across the organization.

o Develop and implement a structured employee performance review process that aligns with company values and promotes employee development, accountability, and continuous improvement.

8. Handbook / Policies

o Update and maintain the employee handbook in collaboration with legal counsel to ensure policies reflect current legal requirements, organizational standards, and best practices.

o Evaluate and implement HR policies and programs that promote compliance, safety, and operational excellence across both states.

 

 

Required and Preferred Qualifications:

· Extensive leadership experience in HR (minimum 7-10 years) with a proven record of handling complex HR issues and organizational change

· Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree or HR-specific certifications (SPHR, SHRM-SCP, etc.) highly preferred

· Valid driver’s license required and ability to travel periodically

· Experience in working-class industries (such as manufacturing, construction, logistics, or similar) is highly preferred and strongly prioritized

· Must commit to working from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm in our San Ramon, CA office and must be available for work on select major holidays

  • Fluency in English and Spanish preferred

 

The Ideal Candidate:  

· A decisive and strategic HR leader with the ability to partner at the executive level and serve as the company’s final line of protection for all HR matters

· Extensive experience managing employment-related legal matters, including workers’ compensation litigation, labor board investigations, legal defense, and regulatory compliance, in blue-collar and working-class environments

· A deep understanding of the challenges and priorities associated with hourly, non-exempt workforces, including injury prevention, safety programs, and reducing X-Mod factors

· Strong interpersonal and team-building skills, able to foster a collaborative and resilient culture

· Exceptional judgment, discretion, and a high level of accountability

· Proactive and adaptable, with a growth mindset and a commitment to continuous improvement

· Tech-savvy and highly proficient with computer systems; Mac use preferred

 

 

Compensation:  

· $90,000 - $130,000 per year, based on experience.
