Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and dynamic Director of Operations to lead and manage our heavy manufacturing facility. This key leadership role requires a deep background in engineering, a strong track record of continuous improvement initiatives, and the ability to drive operational excellence across all aspects of Production, Engineering, Maintenance, Operational Planning, and Workforce Management.
The Director of Operations will oversee daily manufacturing activities, implement strategic initiatives, improve operational efficiency, and ensure that the plant meets production targets while maintaining the highest safety and quality standards. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to lead change, optimize processes, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership:
- Direct day-to-day operations of the manufacturing facility, ensuring production goals are met on time, within budget, and at the highest quality standards.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and execute long-term operational strategies.
- Oversee manufacturing, quality control, logistics, and safety functions within the plant.
- Provide leadership and guidance to plant managers, engineers, and operational staff.
Continuous Improvement:
- Lead the development and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives to drive efficiency, reduce costs, and increase product quality.
- Apply Lean, Six Sigma, and other operational excellence methodologies to optimize production processes.
- Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor process improvements and identify areas for further optimization.
- Lead and mentor cross-functional teams focused on continuous improvement projects.
Engineering & Technology Integration:
- Leverage engineering expertise to drive the adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies and automation systems.
- Ensure the plant’s engineering resources are aligned with production goals, solving technical problems, and driving innovation.
- Oversee the integration of new machinery, systems, and technologies to improve plant capacity and flexibility.
- Manage engineering and technical teams to ensure equipment is maintained and optimized for peak performance.
Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure a safe working environment by promoting safety programs, adhering to regulations, and ensuring compliance with OSHA and other local/national safety standards.
- Implement and monitor programs to minimize workplace accidents, injuries, and downtime.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and industry best practices.
Budget and Financial Management:
- Develop and manage operational budgets, ensuring cost controls and resource allocation are in line with company goals.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings and implement strategies to increase profitability.
- Analyze operational data and financial reports to drive decision-making.
Supply Chain & Inventory Management:
- Optimize inventory management and production scheduling to meet customer demand while minimizing waste.
- Collaborate with the supply chain team to ensure timely procurement of raw materials and manage vendor relationships.
Team Development and Leadership:
- Build and lead a high-performing team of operations professionals, engineers, and support staff.
- Promote a culture of continuous learning, accountability, and performance excellence.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunities for team members.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Serve as a key point of contact for senior management, suppliers, and customers on operational matters.
- Foster positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment on production goals and priorities.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or related field) is required; Master’s degree or MBA is preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in operations management within a heavy manufacturing environment.
- Proven track record of driving continuous improvement, utilizing Lean, Six Sigma, or other process optimization methodologies.
- Experience managing cross-functional teams and leading large-scale engineering projects.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing technologies, automation, and engineering systems.
- Hands-on experience with P&L management, budgeting, and financial reporting.
- Skills:
- Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate teams.
- Exceptional problem-solving abilities, with a focus on operational efficiency and productivity improvement.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
- High proficiency in data analysis, reporting, and performance measurement.
- Ability to navigate complex challenges and prioritize multiple projects.
Certifications (Preferred):
- Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt certification.
- Lean Manufacturing certification.
- PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is a plus.
Work Environment:
- This role is based in a heavy manufacturing plant, requiring time spent on the floor, collaborating with engineering, production, and safety teams.
- Occasional travel may be required for site visits, training, and vendor meetings.
